Pickup and Drop-Off: Why Every Tow Call Needs Two Addresses

Most service businesses have one address per job. The plumber goes to the house, does the work and leaves. Towing is different. Every tow is a trip with two ends, and the second end is where a surprising amount of wasted time comes from. A driver hooks a car, pulls out of the lot and then calls the office to ask where it is going. The office calls the customer. The customer is in an Uber and does not pick up.

Two addresses on every call sounds like a small detail. In practice, it is one of the biggest differences between dispatch that flows and dispatch that stalls.

The Drop-Off Is Part of the Call

The intake checklist in Taking a Tow Call: The Intake Checklist Every Dispatcher Should Use puts "always get the drop-off" right after location for a reason. In TowingBossPro every call has a pickup address and a drop-off address. Both show on the map and both show in the driver app with one-tap navigation. The driver taps the pickup to navigate there, hooks up, then taps the drop-off to navigate to the destination.

When the drop-off is captured at intake, nobody has to chase it later. When it is not, the call is not finished being taken, no matter how fast the truck rolled.

Why the Dispatcher Needs the Drop-Off Too

The drop-off is not just for the driver. It tells the dispatcher where that truck is going to be when the call is done. A flatbed dropping at a body shop on the east side is about to be free on the east side. That is exactly the truck to give the next east-side pickup.

Without the drop-off, the dispatcher is assigning based on where trucks were, not where they will be. With it, the board and the map show the shape of each truck's day: pickup, drop-off, next pickup, next drop-off.

Common Drop-Off Destinations

Most drop-offs fall into a few groups: the customer's home, a repair shop or body shop, a dealer, your own yard for storage or impound, or another location for a transport. For repeat destinations such as the body shops and dealers you work with, save them as customers and locations so the call-taker can pick the address rather than type it from memory. That cuts typos and makes the pin land in the right place.

For impound and storage calls, the drop-off is your yard, and the call carries a storage start date and daily rate so the storage days can be added to the invoice later.

When the Customer Does Not Know Yet

Sometimes the customer honestly does not know where the car should go. They need to call their insurance, their mechanic or their spouse. Do not let that stop the truck. Note on the call that the drop-off is pending and follow up by two-way text. The customer can text back the shop name and address, and the reply lands on their record where the dispatcher can add it to the call.

Set a simple rule: the drop-off gets confirmed before the driver hooks up. A driver sitting on scene with a car on the deck and nowhere to go is the most expensive kind of waiting.

When the drop-off changes after the driver has left, update it on the call, not just in a text to the driver. The app always shows the current address, and the record shows where the car really went when the invoice goes out.

Getting the Pickup Exactly Right

The pickup address has its own problems. Parking lots, highways and apartment complexes do not have clean addresses. Use the closest real address, then put the details in the notes: which level of the garage, which side of the building, northbound or southbound, which mile marker. Access notes such as gate codes and parking instructions go on the call so the driver sees them before pulling up.

If the caller is not sure where they are, ask them to text you a location or a nearby business name. A pickup pin in the wrong spot sends the truck the wrong way before the job even starts.

Two Addresses, One Clean Trip

Every tow has a start and an end. Capture both at intake, put both on the map, and let the driver navigate to each with one tap. The phone calls in the middle disappear. The next guide covers the other thing the driver needs to know on arrival: exactly which vehicle to hook.
