Night Calls and Late Tows: Using the Driver App After Dark
Night calls are a different job. The office is closed or running on one person. The roads are empty but darker. Customers are tired, stressed and sometimes scared. Drop-off locations are closed. And the driver may have been woken up out of bed to take the call. Everything that makes day calls go smoothly matters twice as much after dark.
Two-Way Texting on a Tow Call: When the Customer Replies covered texting with customers. At night, those texts are often the only reassurance a customer gets.
Read Before You Roll
At 2am, nobody wants to call the owner to ask where the car is. The call in the app should have everything: pickup and drop-off, vehicle details, and notes about the scene. Whoever takes the night calls needs to write complete notes, because there is no one to ask later.
Drivers should read the whole call before leaving the yard, not at the scene.
The person taking calls at night should also ask the questions that matter most after dark: is the customer safe where they are, is anyone with them, is their phone charged. Write the answers in the notes so the driver knows what they are walking into. Half-awake mistakes, like heading to the wrong side of a divided highway, are avoided by reading the notes once, carefully, before rolling.
Navigation in the Dark
Unfamiliar places are harder to find at night. Road signs are hard to read, buildings are dark, and landmarks vanish. One-tap navigation from the pickup address removes the guesswork about how to get there.
For highway calls, the notes about direction of travel, mile marker and landmarks matter even more. A car on the shoulder at night is easy to drive past.
Ask the customer to keep their hazards on if it is safe to do so, and write down anything they can see. A lit sign, an overpass or an exit number is much easier to spot in the dark than a mile marker.
Arrival Texts for Wary Customers
A customer waiting alone at night is right to be cautious about any truck that pulls up. The on-the-way text tells them who is coming, and the arrival text tells them the truck that just stopped is the one they called. The live map in the customer app shows them the driver approaching.
Some customers will wait somewhere safe, like inside a store, and only come out when they know the truck is there. The arrival text is what brings them out.
Photos in Low Light
Damage is harder to see and harder to photograph at night. Use work lights or a flashlight aimed at the panel rather than relying on the phone flash, which tends to flatten everything. Take a few extra photos of anything that looks damaged.
Night tows are when disputes are most likely, because the customer could not see the vehicle well either. Good photos protect you.
It is also worth taking a few photos at the drop-off in good light if the drop is your own lot. The next morning, someone can compare and confirm nothing changed between the pickup and the lot.
After-Hours Drop-Offs
Shops and dealers are closed at night, so many night tows go to your own lot or to an after-hours drop at the shop. The notes should say exactly where: which lot, which spot, where the keys go. For your own lot, the access notes should be on file for every driver.
An after-hours drop at a shop deserves a photo of the vehicle where it was left, and a note of where the keys went. The shop opens at 7, finds the car, and nobody has to call to ask.
If the vehicle goes into Impound and Storage, the storage start date and daily rate are tracked, so completing the drop at the time it actually happens keeps that date accurate.
Clocking the Call-Out
Night call-outs should be recorded on the time clock: clock in when you take the call, clock out when the truck is back. That creates a clean record, separate from the day shift, that both the driver and the owner can trust. How call-outs are paid varies by company and local law, so check your local requirements.
The habits that make nights easier are the same ones that make days easier, just more important. See the full driver app on the Tow Truck Driver App page.
Night Calls Without the Guesswork
Notes, navigation, photos and one-tap texts work the same at 2am in the TowingBossPro driver app.
