One-Tap Navigation to the Pickup and the Drop-Off

It sounds like a small feature. It isn't. Ask any dispatcher how much of a shift goes to reading addresses over the phone, and any driver how often he has typed an address into his phone at a red light with a car on the deck. One-tap navigation removes both.

In What a Driver App Should Do for Wrecker and Rollback Operators, we looked at the driver app as a whole. This piece focuses on one part of it that drivers use on every single call.

The Old Way Costs More Than It Looks

On paper, an address goes from the caller to the dispatcher's notes, to the radio or a text, to the driver's handwriting, to the driver's map app. Every hop is a chance for a typo, a misheard road name or a wrong city. "Oak Drive" and "Oak Court" are a mile apart. Highway exits get confused. Apartment complexes have three entrances.

Each mistake costs ten or twenty minutes, a frustrated customer and sometimes a lost call when the customer gives up and phones someone else. Over a month, those minutes add up to whole shifts.

There is also the safety side. A driver squinting at a scrap of paper or thumbing an address into a phone while rolling is not paying attention to traffic. Anything that lets him set the route before he pulls out and then keep both hands on the wheel is worth having. Navigation that starts with one tap, from an address somebody already checked on a map, is about as simple as it gets.

Two Ends, Two Taps

In the TowingBossPro driver app, every call has a pickup and a drop-off, and each has one-tap navigation. The address the dispatcher entered is the address the driver navigates to. Nothing gets retyped.

That second tap — to the drop-off — is the one most systems miss. Field service apps built for plumbers and electricians only know one address per job. A tow always has two, and the drive between them is the part your customer is paying for.

It also means the driver can start the second leg without stopping. Load the car, tap navigation to the drop-off, roll. No digging back through texts to find where it was supposed to go, and no call to dispatch from the shoulder with the vehicle already on the deck.

Saved Locations Make Drop-Offs Reliable

If you tow to the same body shops, dealerships and lots every week, save them as repeat locations. Dispatch picks the location rather than typing it, and the driver navigates to the exact same spot every time. Notes stay attached: which gate, where the after-hours key drop is, which bay to leave it in.

New drivers benefit the most. A driver in his first month doesn't know that the dealer's service entrance is around the back on the side road. The saved location and its notes do.

Keep those location notes current. When a shop moves its key drop or a dealer starts locking the back lot at six, update the saved location once and every driver gets the change on the next call there.

Better Pins Start at Intake

Navigation is only as good as the address you collected. The map helps here, because the pickup and drop-off show on the map at dispatch. If a pin lands in the wrong place — a business name that matched the wrong town, a highway address that dropped onto a frontage road — dispatch can catch it before the driver leaves.

For calls on highways or in big lots, use the notes for the details a map can't capture: northbound shoulder past the exit, level three near the elevators, behind the building by the dumpsters.

Less Radio, More Driving

Every address a driver can navigate to without asking is a call the dispatcher doesn't have to take. On a busy afternoon, that frees dispatch to answer the phone, work the Waiting List and keep the board straight. Drivers keep their eyes on the road instead of a notepad.

Pair navigation with the one-tap on-the-way text and the customer knows you are coming at the same moment the route starts. In the customer app they can follow the driver on a live map, which turns a stressful wait into a predictable one.

A Small Feature With a Big Payoff

One-tap navigation is not glamorous, and nobody buys towing software because of it. But it is one of the features drivers notice most, because it removes friction from every call, all day. Wrong-address trips drop, radio traffic drops and customers wait less.

It works because pickup and drop-off are built into every call rather than tacked on. For the rest of what TowingBossPro does from call to paid, see the towing software page.
